Collaboration

URBSEC was established in 2011 through a shared initiative by University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology. The center enhances previously existing long term collaboration between the two universities and external stakeholders.

The explicit ambition of research teams is to build the center as an open site of interaction where different kinds of local and regional as well as national and international actors come together. The objective is to transcend borders between academic researchers and practitioners in order to establish long-term collaboration, deemed to be essential for the development of new clearly focused research that is simultaneously broad enough in scope to both respond and correspond to the complexity of urban safety and societal security concerns and problems as they are experienced by multiple social stakeholders. Seeking such a both focused and broad approach is decisive for the capacity of the center to deliver knowledge and innovations that both reach across sectoral divides and offer ground for qualified assessments and judgments with regard to democratically desirable policies and solutions.

Through various projects, collaboration exists with national actors such as the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention, and the Swedish Work Environment Authority. Collaboration with local and regional partners includes the City of Gothenburg, the local Crime Prevention Council, the Rescue Services of Greater Gothenburg, and the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland as well as the regional Police Authority.

In parallel, the center partner Security Arena within Lindholmen Science Park offers an interface towards the business community with park members such as Ericsson, the Saab Group and Volvo Technology. Research projects by members of URBSEC have also involved businesses such as Eka of AkzoNobel, OKG Nuclear Power Plant, and Skanska.
