COST Action Meeting in Gothenburg, September 2015

COST Action TU1203 on Crime Prevention through Urban Design and Planning (CPUDP) visited Gothenburg September 28-30, 2015, for a Working Group and Workshop Meeting. The meeting was organized by the Swedish Action TU1203 delegate Associate Professor Michael Landzelius (Director of URBSEC) together with Strategic Development Leader Agneta Essén (Social Resources Department, City of Gothenburg) with the support of the COST Action Management Committee.

COST Action TU1203 on Crime Prevention through Urban Design and Planning has delegates from 26 countries, started in 2012 and runs until the end of 2016. The Action is engaged with the structuring of existing knowledge on CPUDP, and on developing innovative approaches on how to build more secure and safe cities. Studies have shown that there is a correlation between the structure and organization of urban space, on the one hand, and crime as well as fear of crime and feelings of safety, on the other. In developing innovative approaches, the Action builds upon research as well as expertise acquired through best practice experiences of participating countries and systematized through the aggregation of national SWOT-analyses. Specific aims of the Action are to: raise awareness and disseminate knowledge; transfer know-how; provide tools for, in particular, architects and planners; and to train and provide networking opportunities for young researchers.

The meeting in Gothenburg was, in addition to working group meetings on specific topics, focused on processes and partnerships, with a full day of presentations from local actors, with several city bodies, the police, and the university represented. The COST Association was founded in 1971 and stands for Cooperation in Science and Technology, and is since 2014 part of the EU Horizon 2020 framework after having operated under the European Science Foundation for 40 years. COST does not fund research but provides financial support for pan-European, bottom-up networks across all science and technology fields including the social sciences and the humanities. COST Actions are active through meetings, workshops, conferences, training schools, short-term scientific missions, and dissemination activities. Researchers from academia, public and private research institutions, as well as relevant staff from NGOs, industry and SMEs, can participate. Actions have a four-year duration and a minimum participation of delegates from five of the 36 COST Countries.
